Background

Dr John Langley is a senior educator with numerous accomplishments in education, business, government and project leadership. He has lead a number of organisations and projects at local, national and international level and has been involved in the strategic direction setting and operations of a Crown entity, a large tertiary institution and a private company.

 

John is currently Chief Executive Officer of Cognition Education, Auckland. He was previously the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Education at The University of Auckland. As Principal of Auckland College of Education, he led the amalgamation between the College and the University to form the new Faculty of Education on the 1st of September 2004.

 

John has held offices in a number of educational groups such as the New Zealand Association for Research in Education, the Asia Pacific Education Deans Association, the Independent Advisory Group on Youth Offending reporting to several cabinet ministers on youth offending strategies, Expert Advisory Group on the treatment and policy implementation for children and young people with conduct problems, the Teacher Workforce Advisory Group reporting to the Minister of Education, the board of Youth Horizon Trust and the board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to name but some.

 

John has been a teacher, teacher of the deaf, lecturer in a college of education, principal of a large primary school, and was a founding director of a private teachers college in Christchurch. He is also a qualified psychologist.

 

John’s professional interests lie in the fields of applied behaviour analysis, teacher education, teacher effectiveness, school improvement, conduct problems, youth justice, policy development and implementation and international education.

 

As a former principal of Auckland College of Education, director of the Teacher Registration Board, a school principal and head of a large education business, John’s knowledge in areas relating to the role he will play in education in the future include leadership, community partnerships, public-private partnerships, international relations and developments in education.

 

In January 2009 John was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to education.
