Background
After completing degrees at Victoria University Murray worked as a Maori Community Officer and Probation Officer for 10 years.
From 1979 to 2003 he worked in management positions in the Department of Justice and then Department for Courts at both district and then national levels. This included five years as manager of the Probation Service, five years managing Collections (fines and civil debts) and three years managing Courts.
As Assistant Secretary for Justice responsible for the Probation Service from 1988 to 1993, Murray contributed to several reviews of the criminal justice system including the Penal Policy Review of 1989.
He completed management programmes offered by Oxford University; Henley Management College, London; and the Federal Executive Institute, Virginia, USA. Associate of the NZ Institute of Management.
Murray has also done voluntary work for organisations such as Marriage Guidance, Taupo Employment Support Trust, Citizens Advice Bureau and Arts Access Aotearoa.
